No. 2 Seed Campbell Edges No. 6 Seed Liberty, 4-3
Liberty led second-seeded Campbell, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, before the Camels rallied for three runs to down the Lady Flames, 4-3, Friday during the second round of the 2013 Big South Softball Championship.
With the win, Campbell improves its season record to 39-19, and remains in the winner's bracket of the conference tournament. The Lady Flames are now 20-36 on the season. Liberty will now face No. 1 seed and defending Big South champion Coastal Carolina in an elimination game tonight at 9:30 p.m.
Sammi Shivock batted 2-for-3 with a homer for Liberty, and she is now tied for eighth in program history with 23 career home runs. Kelby Allen added a round tripper, becoming the fifth Lady Flame to homer during the 2013 Big South Softball Championship. Hanna Nichols went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Campbell's Raven Lee hit a home run, while Ericka Nesbitt batted 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Campbell right-hander Courtney Roberts (20-6) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits, with seven strikeouts during a complete game.
Liberty's Chandler Ball (9-17) held the Camels to just five hits, fanning five batters while walking three. She went the distance, yielding four runs (two earned).
For the second game in a row, the Lady Flames took a 2-0 lead during the top of the first. Shivock blasted a two-out solo shot, giving Liberty a quick lead. Amber Donovan walked, and then Allen reached on an error. Nichols followed with an RBI single, before Campbell recorded the final out.
Campbell's Lee led off the bottom of the second inning by homering to left, slicing the Camels' deficit in half. Ball then retired the next three batters in order to end the second frame.
Liberty extended its lead to 3-1 in the top of the third, as Allen hit a leadoff round tripper, her team-leading 10th home run of the campaign.
After Ball walked Lee with two outs during the fourth stanza, Donovan made a diving catch on a sinking liner by Stephanie Jones to send the game to the fifth inning.
Katie Zavodny singled in the fifth, but was thrown out on a stolen base attempt. Roberts then got Jill Stephens to foul out for the third out.
Ball worked around a two-out, fifth-inning single by Olivia Scarborough, getting a popout off the bat of Shaela Churchill to end the frame with Liberty ahead, 3-1.
Shivock hit a leadoff single in the sixth, and the next outs came via fielder's choice. Allen moved to third on a pair of wild pitches, before Hanna Nichols popped out to second.
Campbell rallied for three runs during the bottom of the sixth, as Nesbitt hit a leadoff single and Sarah Forgacs drew a walk. Klingler then drove a double off the wall in left, plating Nesbitt with no outs. Ball walked Lee to load the bags for Jones. Liberty recorded two outs, and then Camise Patterson sent a popup between first and second that was dropped during a collision, allowing Campbell to take a 4-3 lead.
Pinch hitter Holly Seiz singled with one out in the top of the seventh. Roberts fanned Katie Han for the second out, bringing Zavodny to the plate. Zavodny sent a sharp one-hopper back to Roberts, who threw out the speedy center fielder to seal the 4-3 victory for Campbell.
