2014 Training Camp Position Preview: WR
During the month of August, LibertyFlames.com will preview each position on Liberty's football roster before the Flames open the season on the road at North Carolina on Aug. 30.
LibertyFlames.com continues its series today by looking at the Flames' wide receivers, a group that returns its top three targets from 2013.
Leading the pack of experienced returners is Darrin Peterson, who led the team and ranked No. 2 in the Big South in receptions (58) and receiving touchdowns (7). He earned All-Big South first-team and VaSID second-team honors and posted the second-best sophomore receiving season in program history (825 receiving yards).
Gabe Henderson followed behind Peterson, ranking second on the team with 47 receptions, 641 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He had a pair of breakout games in 2013, posting back-to-back 100-yard receiving games against Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina.
Dante Shells was third on Liberty's receiving list last year, finishing the season with 29 receptions, 432 receiving yards and a touchdown. Peterson (10 games) and Shells (11 games) received most of the starts for the Flames during the season at wide receiver, while Henderson started two contests.
Ten players provide depth behind Peterson, Henderson and Shells with only one having significant playing time. Senior Jaquan Glover has played in 19 career games at Liberty, recording 16 receptions and 182 career receiving yards.
Justin Fritts and Dakota Kelly impressed the Flames coaching staff during the spring and moved into backup roles on the post spring practice depth chart. Fritts was also named the program's Samkon Gado Award winner, given annually to the most improved player of spring practice.
LibertyFlames.com will continue its position previews on Wednesday when the website takes a look at the Flames offensive line.
