2014 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans

Liberty pitcher Parker Bean has been named to the 2014 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team, selected by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Bean, the Big South Freshman of the Year, posted a 7-3 record with a 2.95 ERA in 2014. Also a first team all-conference member, the right-hander struck out a team-leading 78 and walked 36 batters over 73 1/3 innings.

Bean becomes the fifth Liberty freshman to be selected to the Louisville Slugger team in the team's 24-year history. First baseman and teammate Alex Close was the last Flame to the team in 2012. Third baseman Tyler Bream was selected to the team in 2009, while first baseman Aaron Grijalva was selected to the team in 2005. In 2000, outfielder Keith Butler became the first Liberty player to be named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team. The same year, Baseball America selected shortstop Joey Monahan and Butler to its All-American squad.

Bean finished the year among the Big South leaders in several categories.  The Hanover, Pa. native was eighth in strikeouts and opponent batting average (.224)

The right-hander was named an NCAA.com Top Performer and Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week after posting a career-best 16 strikeouts and coming within two outs of a no-hitter in the win over VMI on April 6.  He followed that effort with 11 strike outs in a complete-game win over Longwood on April 13.

Bean helped the Liberty pitching staff record a Big South leading team ERA of 2.62, a program record. In addition, the Flames ranked 14th nationally in the category.

Bean helped Liberty post a 41-18 record this past spring.  The Flames received the program's first ever at-large selection to a NCAA Regional and appeared at a regional in back-to-back years for the first time in team history.  With 41 wins, Liberty recorded the second most wins and posted the fourth 40-plus win season in in program history. In addition, the Flames set a program high for Big South Conference victories with a 23-3 mark in 2014.
