Coastal Carolina Downs Liberty, 5-1
Coastal Carolina scored three sixth-inning runs during game one on Saturday, sealing a 5-1 win over the visiting Liberty Lady Flames at Coastal Carolina Softball Stadium.
The Chanticleers improve to 24-11, and 6-1 in Big South play with the win, while the Lady Flames fall to 6-28, 1-9 in conference games entering Saturday's second game of the twin bill.
Coastal's Kiana Quolas (17-4) struck out seven Lady Flames, yielding one run on six hits while walking three in the complete-game victory.
Alyssa DiMartino (3-10) drew the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings pitched.
Seven different Chanticleers recorded one base hit apiece, with Morgan Noad hitting a home run and Jessie Winans and Brooke Donovan both posting one double.
Marybeth Sciolino batted 1-for-3 with an RBI for Liberty, while Hanna Nichols (1-for-2) scored one run. Megan Robinson added a double for the Lady Flames.
The Lady Flames got their offense going in the top of the second, as Nichols led off with a single and Sammi Shivock followed by singling on the infield. Quolas fanned the next three batters in a row, keeping the shutout bid intact.
During the bottom of the second, Noad drew a leadoff walk. Amanda Daneker sent her to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Noad reached third on a groundout. DiMartino got Donovan to ground to third to end the threat.
Robinson hit a two-out double down the left field line with two outs in the third inning, before Allen popped to short for the third out.
The Chanticleers went ahead in the bottom half of the third, getting their first two hits of the game. Kasey Oliver hit a one-out infield singled, and went to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Quolas plated Oliver by hitting a single down the line in left. Kory Hayden then grounded out, but not before Coastal took a 1-0 lead.
Katie Han drew a walk to open the fifth stanza, and a DiMartino sacrifice sent her to second. Zavodny singled with two outs, putting runners on the corners. Coastal picked Han off of third during a double steal attempt to bring the rally to a close.
Coastal Carolina doubled its advantage in the fifth. Donovan hit a leadoff double, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. After two outs, Bri Chiusano made it 2-0 with an infield RBI single.
Liberty rallied with two outs in the top of the sixth, as Quolas issued back-to-back free passes to Nichols and Shivock. Sciolino bounced a single into center, scoring Nichols for Liberty's first run, but Sciolino was erased trying to take second on the play.
The hosts answered by scoring three insurance runs during their ensuing at bat. With one out, Noad lined a solo homer to center. Daneker walked, and Winans followed with a double. Donovan hit a sacrifice fly to left, making it 4-1. Rasley then hit an RBI single, boosting Coastal's lead to 5-1.
Han led off the seventh with a sharp single to right. Quolas secured the win by getting the next three batters to record outs.
