Lady Flames Drops Big South Opener at Campbell, 18-14
The Liberty lacrosse team opened Big South Conference play with an 18-14 road loss against the Campbell Fighting Camels on Friday evening at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Lady Flames drop to 1-10 on the year and 0-1 in conference action. The Camels improve to 5-4 overall and even their Big South record at 1-1.
After Campbell got on the scoreboard first with a marker at 27:42, Liberty came right back with a pair of goals to go on top, 2-1, with 22:06 remaining in the first period. Michaela Rich notched the Lady Flames' first goal, scoring on a long pass from Nina Dunay. Sam Struss followed with her first tally of the contest off of a Courtney Brown assist, putting the visitors in front by one.
After the Camels tied the game at two on a Loren Day goal, Rich put Liberty back in front by one with her second marker of the game and 11th of the season with 20:02 on the game clock. On the play, Morgan Becker notched her first of two assists in the contest.
Day found the back of the net for the second time on the day, before Kallie Britton and Dunay recorded a goal apiece, putting Liberty back in front, 5-3, with 11:26 remaining in the first period.
The back-and-forth affair continued as the Camels went on a 2-0 spurt to tie the game at five with 6:27 on the game clock.
The Lady Flames answered Campbell's two-goal run with a two-goal stretch of their own. For the first time this season, the Becker sisters connected for a score as Morgan set up younger sister Olivia. A mere 14 seconds later, Olivia Becker whipped home another goal off of a Britton assist, extending Liberty's lead to 7-5, with 5:12 remaining until halftime.
The Camels tallied a pair of goals in the final minute of the first half to tie the game heading into the break.
Campbell came out strong out of the intermission, scoring the first six goals of the second stanza. Taelar Errington tallied three scores during the 6-0 stretch for the Camels.
Morgan Becker halted the Campbell run with her first goal of the match at 19:30, making the score 13-8 in favor of the home team.
The Camels notched two more markers, before Olivia Becker tossed her third goal of the contest in between the pipes, pulling Liberty within six, at 15-9, with 13:10 showing on the game clock.
Three more goals from the Camels extended their lead to its largest margin at 18-9 with 9:25 remaining in the game.
Liberty's offense picked up steam in the last nine minutes, scoring the final five goals of the contest. Struss notched her second and third goals of the game, while Dunay, Morgan Becker and Britton each tallied their second markers of the contest.
The Lady Flames' 5-0 run was not enough as the home team held on for the 18-14 victory. Liberty's 14 goals were its most this season.
For the game, Campbell held the edge in shots, 39-25, ground balls, 19-16, draw controls, 20-14, and caused turnovers, 9-7.
Day and Errington led the way for the Camels' offense with seven and six goals, respectively. Day also had a contest-best seven draw controls. Dunay had a game-high three assists. Liberty's Jillian Krick and Campbell's Maddy Dolinar each had four ground balls to pace both squads.
In goal, the Lady Flames' Kristen Masullo notched six saves in the loss, while the Camels' Brittany Kincer earned the win after making five stops.
The Lady Flames continue their weekend road trip on Sunday with a road contest at Presbyterian College. Game time versus the Blue Hose is set for 1 p.m.
