Flames Set to Host One-Day Match Play Event

Directions to Poplar Grove Golf Course

Liberty will begin the final month of its regular season schedule by hosting the Liberty University Match Play Invitational on Saturday at Poplar Grove Golf Course in Amherst, Va.

The one-day match play event will feature two sessions of golf between four in-state programs (Golfstat/Golfweek rankings): George Mason (No. 242/246), James Madison (No. 120/121), Liberty (No. 38/37) and Radford (No. 89/115).

The four teams will be paired against each other during the morning flight which begins at 8 a.m., with each of the individual match-ups going out off the No. 1 tee (par 4, 384 yards).

The afternoon flight will follow the same format, with the two losing teams from the morning squaring off against each other first. The last wave of players sent off during the afternoon flight will be the individuals from the morning rounds two winning teams.

The event will be contested at Poplar Grove Golf Course, one of two home courses for the Liberty Flames golf program.

The par-72, 7,059-yard trek opened in 2004 and was one of the final golf courses designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Sam Snead, who holds the PGA Tour record for most career PGA Tour tournament victories (82). 
The tournament is the first event Liberty has hosted since the Frank Landrey Invitational, which was played at the Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonville, Va., Oct. 5-6, 2009.

Liberty is coming off a fifth-place showing at the Linger Longer Invitational, hosted by Mercer and Kennesaw State at Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Planation in Greensboro, Ga.

The Flames are paced by senior golfers Chase Marinell (72.85) and Niklas Lindstrom (73.00), who rank second and fourth respectively in the Big South this year.

Fellow Big South foe Radford has finished third our higher in each of its last three events, including a third-place showing at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate. The Highlanders are led by junior Tanner Carbaugh, who ranks 11th in the Big South with a 73.67 stroke average, directly followed by senior Callum Tarren, who ranks 12th in the conference (73.75).

James Madison also participated in the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, finishing seven strokes behind Radford to take fourth place in the William & Mary hosted event. Three of the Dukes' top golfers all have a stroke average below 73.00: junior Trey Smith (72.48), freshman Ryan Cole (72.59) and junior Jon Weiss (72.67).

George Mason was also one of the 27 teams in the field at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, finishing in 23rd place. The Patriots' top golfer is senior Kevin Yerks, who leads the team with a 74.83 stroke average.

The match play event is open to the public and is free of charge. The morning flight is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., with an anticipated beginning for the afternoon flight between 1:30  and 2 p.m.
