7-Run 4th Inning Keys Liberty's 14-10 Win Over UNCG
Liberty scored seven runs in the fourth inning, overcoming an 8-4 deficit en route to a 14-10 victory, during game one on Wednesday at Liberty Softball Field.
The Lady Flames picked up their second win in a row, advancing their record to 6-27 on the campaign, while UNCG falls to 14-18 in 2014. Liberty scored a season-high 14 runs, also posting a season-best 14 hits, as the hosts earned their first win over UNCG since April 7, 2010.
Four Lady Flames totaled two or more hits, led by Kelby Allen, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Every Liberty starter scored at least one run. Megan Robinson batted 2-for-4, hitting her team-best sixth home run and driving in three runs. Hanna Nichols went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Blair Lawrence went 2-for-4 with two runs.
For UNCG, Katelyn Bedwell went 3-for-3 with two homers and four RBIs. Allison Geiner batted 2-for-4, while Nicole Thomas hit 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Alyssa DiMartino (3-9) allowed eight runs on seven hits in four innings, earning the victory. She also batted 1-for-4 with a career-high three RBIs. Annah Jo Brittingham pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on two hits to gain her second save. Brittingham hit a double and drove in two runs.
UNCG's Raeanne Hanks fell to 7-11 on the season, yielding 11 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in four innings of work. Nicole Thomas pitched two innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
UNCG scored first, as Bedwell homered with two outs in the top of the first.
After leaving two runners on base in the first inning, Liberty jumped ahead with a four-run second. Nichols hit a leadoff single, and made it to third after an error and a stolen base. DiMartino reached on an error, sending Nichols home. A Lawrence single and Zavodny walk loaded the bases. Robinson then hit a two-run single, and Allen later added an RBI base hit for a 4-1 lead. An infield fly and a runner caught stealing ended the inning.
The Spartans scored the next seven runs, beginning with four in the top of the third. With two outs and two on, Lindsay Thomas drove in one run. Danielle Vega followed with an RBI double, and Nicole Thomas gave UNCG a 5-4 lead with a two-run single.
The visitors boosted their advantage to 8-4 when Bedwell blasted a three-run homer to left center in the top of the fourth.
Liberty wasted no time, putting up seven fourth-inning runs on five hits, making use of two UNCG errors. The first eight Lady Flames reached base, with Allen driving in Liberty's first run of the inning and Shivock hitting a two-RBI double to make it 8-7. Marybeth Sciolino tied the game with an RBI single, and Nichols followed with a go-ahead double. After Nicole Thomas entered the circle, Brittingham and DiMartino both added RBIs, as the hosts built an 11-8 advantage by the end of the inning.
The Lady Flames scored on a Robinson solo home run in the fifth, increasing their lead to 12-8.
UNCG threatened in the top of the sixth, but left two on base when Lindsay Thomas flew out to deep center.
Nichols walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and scored on a double by Brittingham. DiMartino plated Brittingham with an infield single off of Hanks, who had just re-entered the circle.
Brittingham, who came on in relief of DiMartino in the fifth, yielded a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, as Toni MacReynolds and Alison Geiner both recorded RBIs. Dominique Madruga flew out with two runners on base to end the game, as Liberty won, 14-10.
