No. 5 North Seed Liberty Meets No. 4 South Seed Winthrop in BSC Championship
After garnering the No. 5 seed in the Big South Conference North Division, the Liberty men's basketball team will square with the South Division's No. 4 seed Winthrop, in the opening round of the 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championship.
The contest will take place on Wednesday inside Coastal Carolina's arena, The HTC Center in Conway, S.C. Tipoff is slated for noon with the contest airing live on the Big South Network. The winner will meet overall No. 1 seed High Point in the quarterfinals, Friday at noon on ESPN3.
Liberty and Winthrop met once in the regular season on Feb. 4. Despite the contest being a close affair in the first 35 minutes, the Eagles used a 15-3 run in the final five to pull out the 73-62 decision.
The Flames and Eagles have met five times in the Big South Championship, with Winthrop holding a 4-1 advantage in postseason play. The last meeting between the two squads took place in Dale Layer's first season as Liberty's head coach, resulting in an 80-72 win for the Eagles inside the Winthrop Coliseum (March 2, 2010).
The championship will begin Wednesday, March 5 with four first round games. No. 4 South seed Winthrop will play No. 5 North seed and defending champion Liberty at 12 p.m., while No. 3 North seed Radford meets No. 6 South seed Presbyterian College at 2 p.m. In the evening session, No. 4 North seed Campbell will play No. 5 South seed Charleston Southern at 6 p.m., with No. 3 South seed Gardner-Webb facing No. 6 North seed Longwood at 8 p.m. Wednesday's winners will advance to Friday's quarterfinal round.
High Point (16-13, 12-4 Big South) is the No. 1 North seed after winning the outright North Division championship for the second consecutive year. The Panthers will open against the winner of Winthrop-Liberty on March 7 at 12 p.m. Championship host Coastal Carolina (18-12, 11-5 Big South) is the No. 1 South seed after winning the outright South Division crown -- the Chanticleers' first division title. The Chanticleers will open against the winner of Campbell-Charleston Southern at 6 p.m. on March 7.
No. 2 South seed UNC Asheville begins its postseason against the winner of Radford-Presbyterian College Friday at 2 p.m. VMI is the No. 2 North seed for the second-straight year and plays the winner of Gardner-Webb-Longwood Friday night at 8 p.m.
High Point's 12-4 record in league play clinched the outright regular-season championship and overall No. 1 seed to secure the Big South's automatic bid to the NIT should the Panthers not win the conference tournament.
All games will be played at The HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. Individual session tickets will go on sale starting Sunday, March 2 by visiting www.GoCCUSports.com/tickets. Beginning Monday, March 3, tickets can be purchased in-person at the Coastal Carolina Athletics Ticket Office in Arcadia Hall beginning at 9 a.m., as well as by phone at 843-347-8499.
All four first round games will be broadcast live on The Big South Network presented by State Farm. The 2014 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Men's Basketball Championship will continue with the quarterfinals on Friday, March 7 and semifinals on Saturday, March 8 with both days being carried on ESPN3 and WatchESPN. The Championship game will be contested Sunday, March 9 live on ESPN2 at 12 p.m. The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
