Wilson Scores Twice, as Liberty Downs Campbell, 3-1
Forward Sachem Wilson scored twice in the first half, helping to propel the Liberty Flames to a 3-1 victory over the Campbell Fighting Camels in a Big South Conference match, Saturday night at Eaker Athletic Complex.
Wilson provided Liberty a quick 1-0 lead during the 10th minute with his seventh goal of the season and scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year during the 34th minute to give the Flames a 2-0 advantage after on half of play.
Forward Tyler Bullock added his second goal of the year in the second half in the Liberty win.
With the win, Liberty stays in the hunt for one of the top four seeds and a home field advantage for the Big South Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinals on Nov. 12. The Flames move to 5-4 in conference play and 9-7 overall. Liberty has won five out of its last seven contests. Campbell falls to 4-3-1 in Big South action and 4-9-3 overall.
Liberty took a 1-0 advantage on its first shot of the contest. After forcing a turnover in the midfield by a Camel defender, Wilson right-footed a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the left corner of the goal at 9:28 and an early edge.
Neither team was able to get a shot on goal during the next 23 minutes to force any save attempts by either goalkeeper.
Liberty's defensive pressure yielded a scoring opportunity during the 34th minute. Once again, the Flames were able to force a turnover at the top of the box. Wilson picked up the turnover and fired a left-footed shot into the top left corner of the net for his second goal of the contest and a two-goal Liberty lead.
The opening period ending with each team having to turn away corner kick attempts. During the 39th minute, a header off a corner kick by Flames defender Sam Duininck was stopped by Campbell goalkeeper Ethan Hall.
Later, Liberty goalkeeper Jeremy Lee corralled a header by Camel defender Travis Golden off a corner kick during the 42nd minute to allow the Flames to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Host Campbell held a 6-4 edge in shots, while Liberty had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks during the first half.
After clearing a Liberty corner kick during the 52nd minute, Campbell cut the Liberty to one goal during the early minutes of the second half. Forward Jhuvon Francis took a long pass over the top of the Flames' defense and cut back toward the 18-yard box for a shot during the 56th minute. The forward squeezed the shot inside the right post for his sixth goal of the season, slicing the Liberty lead to 2-1.
Less than five minutes later, the visiting Flames countered with a goal to return their two-goal lead. Forward Tyler Bullock pounced on a failed clearing attempt within the box by the Camels during the 61st minute and scored to give Liberty what proved to be the final score of 3-1.
The Flames' defense then took over not allowing a shot to reach its goalkeeper, with the best Camel scoring opportunity coming on a corner kick during the 72nd minute.
Campbell held a 16-7 shot advantage over the Liberty in the contest. However, the Camels had only two shots on goal, while the Flames had five. Corner kicks were even at 5-5.
Lee recorded one save playing the entire 90 minutes between the posts for Liberty. Hall made two saves for Campbell.
Liberty returns home for its final regular season contest of 2013, Wednesday. The Flames will host the Radford Highlanders for a Big South match at Osborne Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. Before the game, the Liberty seniors will be honored.
