Bouffard's Pair of Goals Lead Liberty to Victory
Liberty women's soccer forward Jaime Bouffard helped give the Lady Flames their third straight Big South win, Saturday afternoon, scoring a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb.
With the win at Greene-Harbison Field, Liberty moves to 11-4-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play. Gardner-Webb falls to 3-12-1 on the year and 1-7-0 in Big South action. Liberty now leads the all-time series, 4-1-4, picking up its first win over the Runnin' Bulldogs since Oct. 11, 2010. Saturday's win breaks up a string of three consecutive ties against Gardner-Webb.
The victory also marks the first time Liberty has posted six conference wins since 2009. That year, the Lady Flames went 6-1-2 en route to capturing the Big South regular-season title.
Gardner-Webb lit up the scoreboard first, finding the net early in the 19th minute. Reynolds made a pass up to Brandi Arey, who broke away from the defense and capitalized on a 1-on-1 with goalkeeper Holly Van Noord, sneaking it past the netminder for the 1-0 lead.
Bouffard evened the contest just over 10 minutes later. With both teams battling for the ball in a scrum, the sophomore chipped it out and over goalkeeper Amy Schmitt's head, tying the contest at 1-1 before halftime.
In the second period, Bouffard gave the Lady Flames the lead in the 56th minute. The forward spotted a loose ball in motion, booting it from 12 yards out into the back of the net for her second goal of the contest. Bouffard's third marker of the year allowed Liberty to take a 2-1 advantage.
Madison Kauzlarich capped Liberty's scoring on the night, giving the Lady Flames an insurance goal during the 86th minute. The sophomore's unassisted goal which ultimately set up the 3-1 final was her second on the year.
Liberty continued the high-volume shooting trend, posting 31 shots compared to seven for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Liberty also held a 14-3 advantage on corner kicks. Van Noord played the entire contest in between the pipes for the Lady Flames, finishing with two saves. Schmitt also remained in the net all 90 minutes, making 10 saves.
Liberty remains on the road, Wednesday, squaring off against Winthrop. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
