Liberty Concludes Fall Schedule at Rod Myers Invitational
The Flames will conclude the fall portion of their 2013-14 men's golf schedule this weekend when Liberty travels to Durham, N.C., to compete in the 2013 Rod Myers Invitational.
The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Duke University Golf Club, a par-72, 7,156-yard course that opened to play in 1957 and is the only Robert Trent Jones golf course around the Durham region.
The course hosted the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, where Florida captured its fourth collegiate national title.
The Flames wrapped up their fall slate last year at this same event, finishing fourth out of 11 teams with an eight-over par 872 (301-286-285).
All but one of the teams that were in last year's Rod Myers Invitational field are back for another three trips around the Duke course. Ohio State, currently ranked No. 53 by Golfstat and No. 60 by Golfweek, is the only newcomer to this year's field.
Duke, who is ranked No. 25 in the latest Golf Week/Nike Golf Division I Coaches Poll, has won its own tournament 11 times, including last year.
The Blue Devils used the familiarity of their home course to win the event by a dozen strokes, posting a winning score of 12-under par 852 (287-287-278). The win was one of five tournaments Duke claimed during the 2012-13 season, including the ACC Championship.
Three of Liberty's starting five golfers from last year's event will return to the lineup for head coach Jeff Thomas. Ian McConnell led Liberty's returning players with a one-over par 217 (77-72-68), which was good enough for a share of 16th place.
Chase Marinell followed, finishing in 20th place with a three-over par 219 (73-72-74), while Niklas Lindstrom finished in 25th place with a four-over par 220 (77-71-72).
Marinell leads the Flames on the year with a 72.67 stroke average and two top 10 finishes in three events. The senior finished tied for ninth place at last week's Shoal Creek Invitational, hosted by UAB. He carded a two-under par 214 (71-67-76) and was named Big South Men's Golfer of the Week for his performance.
Mathieu Fenasse is directly behind Marinell on Liberty's roster with a 72.83 season stroke average. The junior opened the year with a sixth-place finish at the Rees Jones Invitational with a three-over par 219 (72-75-72), followed by a two-over par 218 (72-70-76) at the Shoal Creek Invitational, where he finished in 24th place.
Lindstrom is next on Liberty's roster with a 74.00 season stroke average, spotlighted by a fourth-place finished at the Northern Intercollegiate with a two-under par 214 (70-71-73).
McConnell currently ranks fourth on the squad with a 74.56 stroke average. The senior has posted a pair of sub-70 rounds this fall and finished tied for 24th at the Shoal Creek Invitational with a season-best two-over par 218 (68-75-75).
Live stats for all three rounds of the Rod Myers Invitational will be available via Golfstat. The 11-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday and wrap up the event with 18 additional holes on Sunday.
