Liberty Men's XC Rises to No. 7 in SE Region
A strong sixth-place finish at Saturday's Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational helped the Liberty men's cross country team move up to a season-best No. 7 in the Southeast Region, as announced today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Flames' regional ranking is their highest since Oct. 18, 2010, when the Flames also checked in at No. 7 in the Southeast Region.
Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational champion North Carolina claims the top spot in this week's Southeast Region poll, followed by Eastern Kentucky and Virginia. High Point, which placed 10th at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational, drops to No. 13 in the region.
Redshirt junior Josh MacDonald finished ninth overall at Virginia on Saturday, covering the undulating 8K course in a personal-best 23:59.3. His front-running effort helped the Flames place sixth out of 13 teams, 11 of which were regionally ranked, with 141 points.
Liberty will now take a break from competition before sending a partial team to Charlotte, N.C., on Oct. 11 for the Royal Cross Country Challenge.
Many of the top Flames and Lady Flames will not return to action until Oct. 19. That day, Liberty's men's and women's squads will square off against a bevy of nationally and regionally ranked opponents at the ISU Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
