An appearance in the semifinals of the Division II doubles bracket by junior Dillon Segur and sophomore Egon Samaai highlighted action for the Liberty Flames men's tennis squad this past weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships (SIC). Samaai also posted a strong showing in singles play, reaching the quarterfinals of the Division III bracket.

Overall, the Flames recorded 10 singles victories and three doubles wins during the weekend. The SIC, the nation's oldest fall collegiate tournament, featured players from some of the top tennis programs in the country, including Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Clemson.

Segur and Samaai opened doubles play with a dominating 8-1 victory against Tennessee's Sunay Bhat and Colton Norton. In the round of 16, the Flames' duo rolled past Anton Kovrigin and Jeffrey Offerdahl of Vanderbilt, 8-3, to advance to the quarterfinals against Alabama's Stuart Kenyon and Saxon Buehning. Segur and Samaai downed the Crimson Tide's tandem, 8-5, for their third win of the tournament. In the semifinals, Segur and Samaai's run was ended by Rodrigo Encinas and Josh Record of College of Charleston, 8-6.

Samaai's strong play continued in his singles matches. The sophomore downed Colin Edwards of Georgia Tech, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, Samaai ousted Record in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Samaai's round of 16 matchup pitted the South African native against Joao Silva of ETSU. Samaai outlasted Silva in the first set, 7-6, before dominating the second set, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. Alex Calot of Charlotte dealt Samaai his first loss, defeating the sophomore, 6-2, 6-1.

Four more Flames notched victories in their opening matches. In the Division I bracket, Shea Thomas defeated Portland's Reid deLaubenfels, 7-5, 6-2, before falling to Hunter Harrington of Clemson, 6-2, 6-3.

Segur rallied from a one-set deficit to Evgeny Silitski of Georgia Gwinnett to claim the 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in the Division II draw. It was the junior's fourth singles win during the fall season in just two tournaments. Segur fell in the second round to Diego Nunez of ETSU, 6-4, 6-3.

In the Division III bracket, Liberty's Alejandro Llamas collected a come-from-behind 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4, victory against Georgia Southern's Rafael Racy, while Guillem Secanell knocked off Ryan McMullan of Clemson, in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Both Llamas and Secanell were ousted in their second round matchups.

In consolation play, the Flames' Jorge Azuero picked up a victory in the Division II bracket, while Stan Vaughan recorded a pair of wins in the Division III draw.

Liberty will take a couple weeks off before competing in its next tournament at Virginia, beginning on Oct. 4 in Charlottesville.
