UNCW Fall Invitational Final Results

The Liberty Flames men's tennis squad opened its fall schedule with an appearance in the UNCW Fall Invitational. The Flames, competing with five doubles entrants and 10 singles entrants, posted 18 victories overall, including four doubles wins and 14 singles victories.

Liberty was one of seven teams represented at the tournament. Joining the Flames were host UNCW, East Carolina, North Carolina Central, VCU, Chattanooga and New Mexico.

"This was a great start to our fall schedule," commented Liberty head coach Chris Johnson. "We had several good wins overall, but Dillon Segur really came to play. He made a deep run in a field of very strong players."

Segur's play highlighted action for the Flames. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native posted three singles wins, en route to an appearance in the Flight B finals. In his opening match, Segur bounced back after dropping the first set to UNCW's Christiaan Van der Burgh, 4-6, and won the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3,. In the quarterfinals, Segur rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set win against Chattanooga's John Peacey. Segur's momentum continued in the semifinals, when the junior once again rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat James Hignett of New Mexico, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Segur's bid to win the flight title fell short, losing to UNCW's Zach Hublitz, 6-4, 6-1.

Also in singles play, Shea Thomas, Guillem Secanell and Carson Greve each tallied a pair of victories.

After dropping his first two matches, Thomas finished the tournament strong, capturing a pair of straight-set wins. Thomas defeated North Carolina Central's Stephan Charles-Donatien, 6-0, 6-1, before wrapping up the tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 ousting of Chattanooga's Jorge Varon.

Secanell rebounded from a loss in his opening match to defeat W. East of North Carolina Central, 6-4, 6-1, and Chattanooga's Luke Saunders, 6-2, 6-3.

Jorge Azuero, Sergio Mourelo, Stan Vaughan, Alejandro Llamas and Josiah Boda each finished the tournament with one win in singles tilts for Liberty.

In doubles play, four out of five duos for the Flames captured a win. Azuero/Segur, Thomas/Egon Samaai, Mourelo/Boda and Vaughan/Llamas each tallied a victory for Liberty.

The Flames continue fall play this weekend with a trip to the Southern Intercollegiate Championship (SIC) in Athens, Ga. Action at the SIC begins on Friday and continues through Sunday.
