For their third year in a row and the fourth time in the last five seasons, Liberty opened its football season against an FBS opponent, falling to Kent State, 17-10, on Thursday evening.

The seven-point setback to the Golden Flashes at Dix Stadium was Liberty's second-straight season-opening loss under head coach Turner Gill. The two losses, both to FBS opponents, have come by a combined 10 points (lost at Wake Forest, 20-17, on Sept. 1, 2012).

An 11-yard touchdown pass from Josh Woodrum to Gabe Henderson with 7:25 left to play in the third quarter gave Liberty a 10-7 lead against Kent State. The Flames' three-point edge stood until the Golden Flashes tied the game, 10-10, on a field goal with 10:57 left to play in the fourth quarter.

Six-plus minutes later, Kent State took the lead for good on a 42-yard touchdown play at the 4:28 mark of the fourth quarter. Liberty had one last shot at tying the game, getting into Kent State territory with less than two minutes to play, but the home team was able to close out the seven-point win with one last defensive stop.
