For the third year in a row, Liberty opened its football season on the road at an FBS opponent and for the second-straight year under head coach Turner Gill the Flames nearly pulled off the victory.

Liberty entered the fourth and final quarter of its 2013 season-opening contest at Kent State holding a 10-7 lead. However, the hometown Golden Flashes thrilled the 20,790 fans at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio, by scoring 10-unasnwered points during the game's final 11 minutes to steal the victory from the Flames, 17-10.

The Flames did have one last chance to potentially send the contest into overtime, as Liberty's last drive of the game entered Kent State territory after a 23-yard pass play from quarterback Josh Woodrum to wide receiver Darrin Peterson.

However, Woodrum's next three pass attempts fell incomplete and Kent State ran the clock to all zeros to secure its 11th consecutive victory at home.

The Liberty Flames Sports Network was on site at the season-opening contest and provides this video recap, including interviews with Gill and senior safety Aaron Dial, who had a career-high eight tackles to tie for team-high tackling honors.
