Emilie Kaufman placed 13th overall in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday at the U.S. Open.

Liberty's Emilie Kaufman scored a 13th-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday at the U.S. Open, while Laura Day placed 24th in the same event. The Liberty 400-meter relay team came in 18th, capping the Lady Flames' participation at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.

Thanks to Kaufman taking 13th, Liberty is currently tied for 52nd place with four points, heading into Saturday's fifth and final day of competition. Kaufman registered the highest individual position at a USA Swimming national meet in program history.

Kaufman, a rising senior from Kirkland, Wash., took fifth place in the 100-meter breaststroke B final with a time of 1:10.31, good for 13th overall. Her finish gave Liberty its first four points of the meet. Day, a native of Peyton, Colo., swam 1:12.22 to place eighth in the C final, earning 24th position out of 71 total finishers on Friday.

In the final event of Friday's evening session, the Lady Flames' quartet of Kaufman, Day, Jess Reinhardt and Cori Gary finished in the 18th spot with a 4:19.31 clocking. Liberty was edged out by .57 seconds for the 16th and final scoring position.

Kaufman and Day, competing in the same morning flight, went 1-2 during heat six of 100-meter breaststroke qualifying. Kaufman swam a lifetime-best 1:09.97, trimming her previous best by nearly 2.5 seconds. Day clocked 1:11.07 in prelims, good for a personal best as well. Both Lady Flames qualified for evening finals, with Kaufman posting the 11th fastest qualifying time and Day placing 17th in prelims.

During live heats at the 2013 U.S. Open, Liberty swimming clocked a total of four personal bests and earned three finals swims (two individuals, one relay).
