Emily Duff trimmed over two seconds off of her lifetime best in the 200-meter backstroke on Wednesday at the U.S. Open.

Liberty swimming began its participation at the 2013 U.S. Open on Wednesday, when Emilie Kaufman, Emily Duff and Laura Day all recorded lifetime bests at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.

Kaufman placed 28th overall in qualifying rounds of the 200-meter breaststroke in a personal-best 2:36.92. She finished second in her heat, and was in the top half of the field of 57 competitors. The native of Kirkland, Wash., earned her way to the U.S. Open by swimming a 2:15.00 in the 200-yard breaststroke at the 2013 CCSA Championships.

After a day off from competition, Kaufman will next race on Friday, when she joins teammate Day in prelims of the 100-meter breaststroke.

Duff trimmed over two seconds off of her previous lifetime best, swimming 2:22.59 during 200-meter backstroke prelims on Wednesday. Taking second in her heat, Duff placed 43rd overall. She punched her ticket to Irvine this Feb., when she clocked a 1:58.30 while taking second place in the CCSA final of the 200-yard backstroke.

Following the morning session, Day swam a time trial in the 200-meter breaststroke. The Peyton, Colo., native clocked a lifetime-best 2:38.90, her best time by more than a second.

Kaufman, Duff and Day are each candidates to appear on Liberty's 400-meter medley relay, Friday evening.

Tomorrow, rising sophomore Jess Reinhardt will compete in the 100-meter fly during day three of the 2013 U.S. Open.
