Liberty Blanks N.C. Central 4-0 to Finish Regular Season
The Liberty Flames concluded the 2013 regular season with a 4-0 shutout of the N.C. Central Eagles on Friday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts. The Flames finish the regular season with an 11-10 (3-5 Big South) overall record. With the loss, N.C. Central's record drops to 4-10.
Liberty opened the match with a sweep of the three doubles matches, marking the sixth doubles sweep of the season for the Flames. In the No. 1 position, Shea Thomas and Egon Samaai collected an 8-3 win against Daniil Gerasimov and Jose Fabara for their team-best 14th victory of the year. Siim Tuus and Guillem Secanell also won 8-3, downing Tamina Kienka and Jamal Hoyte in the No. 3 spot. Liberty's No. 2 duo of Jorge Azuero and Dillon Segur won for the 13th time this season with an 8-2 ousting of Stephan Charles and Fabrice George.
The Flames rolled through the singles matches, collecting wins in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 positions. The other three matches were ruled unfinished after Liberty clinched the contest. Thomas dropped Gerasimov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to conclude the dual-match season with a team-high 15 singles wins. In the No. 2 spot, Tuus bounced Fabara 6-1, 6-2 for his 12th singles victory of the year. Azuero breezed past George 6-2, 6-2, improving to 14-4 overall on the season in singles action.
"The team played very well today," commented Liberty assistant coach Ryan Fitzwilliam. "We had a convincing win and expect to carry this momentum into the Big South Conference tournament."
The Flames will now begin to make preparations for the Big South Championship, which opens on April 17 in Rock Hill, S.C. Seedings and match times will be released at a later date.
