Lady Flames Edge Coastal Carolina, 7-6
Jen Freymond scored three goals as the Liberty Lady Flames defeated the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 7-6, in Big South Conference action on Friday night at Brooks Stadium. Liberty improves to 7-8 on the season and 3-2 in conference contests. Coastal Carolina falls to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the Big South.
Coastal Carolina opened the contest with a quick score just 41 seconds into the game. Keri White found the back of the net for the Chanticleers, giving them the early 1-0 advantage.
With 25:50 showing on the game clock, Kacie Fogle whipped the ball from close range into the goal for the Lady Flames, knotting the contest at one apiece.
After White notched her second score of the contest for Coastal Carolina, the game remained scoreless for the next 8:45. Liberty's Freymond ended the scoring drought with her first marker of the season to even the score at 2-2.
Nearing the one minute mark of the opening stanza, the Lady Flames' Sam Struss worked her way into the eight-meter arc and drew a foul on Coastal Carolina, setting up a free-position opportunity for Liberty. Struss capitalized on the scoring chance, firing a shot past Chanticleers' goalie Trista Kuehn to put the visitors on top 3-2 heading into the halftime break.
The Lady Flames extended their advantage to two as Fogle converted on a free-position attempt with 2:03 elapsed in the final stanza. Fogle's second goal of the game and 15th tally of the year made the score 4-2 in favor of Liberty.
Coastal Carolina cut the Lady Flames' lead to just one after Kimmy Delonge scored for the host team. Nina Dunay quickly responded with a goal for Liberty just 33 seconds after Delonge's tally to put the Lady Flames back on top by two at 5-3.
The Chanticleers tied the contest at five apiece on back-to-back goals from Sara Nolan, the second of which came with 21:09 remaining in the game.
Freymond put the Lady Flames back in the lead with her second and third scores of the contest. The senior's third marker of the game and 21st tally of the season came on a bounce shot past Kuehn on a free-position attempt to give Liberty a 7-5 edge with 14:50 showing on the game clock.
Coastal Carolina pulled within one, at 7-6, with 7:08 left in the contest after a goal by Paige Timberg. With time running out, the Chanticleers had one last chance to tie the score, but Liberty's defense clamped down and did not allow Coastal Carolina to get a shot off as the final horn sounded.
For the contest, Liberty outshot Coastal Carolina, 19-17, and caused nine turnovers to the host's seven. Both teams finished the game with 16 ground balls each, while the Chanticleers held the slight edge in draw controls at 8-7.
Lady Flames goalie Kristen Masullo finished the game with four saves, while Kuehn notched seven stops in the loss.
Liberty concludes its weekend road trip on Sunday at Big South foe Winthrop. A win against the Eagles will secure a birth in the Big South Lacrosse Championship for the Lady Flames. Game time against Winthrop is slated for 3 p.m.
