Liberty to Send 7 Swimmers to Last Chance Meet
The Liberty swimming team will have seven competitors at the Ohio State Last Chance Meet, held on Sunday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
The Last Chance Meet provides swimming student-athletes the opportunity to compete in events in order to earn qualifying times for the 2013 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships. Swimmers are also attempting to place their seed times in the top 38 nationally, which is how many selections will be made per individual event for nationals this year.
Selections for the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships will be announced on March 6. The national meet will take place from March 21-23 at IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
How to Follow the Lady Flames
Fans unable to attend the Last Chance Meet can follow the meet through live results, provided by Ohio State. Live results can be accessed through the Live Stats link on the swimming page of LibertyFlames.com.
In addition to this weekend's last chance meet, several large conferences – Pac 12, Big 12, BIG EAST – all have their conference meets this week. The national seed times are expected to change considerably throughout the week due to the number of teams and student-athletes yet to complete their regular seasons.
The Lady Flames will enter their 200 free relay in the meet on Sunday. Brye Ravettine, Cori Gary, Chloe Thomas and Meghan Babcock swam a B cut and conference-record 1:30.01 at the CCSA Championships. They will attempt to reach the NCAA A cut of 1:29.80, as only relays with the A standard will be invited to the NCAA meet this season. A total of 17 200 free relays have met the A cut this year, with Liberty's being the 19th fastest.
At present, Jess Reinhardt has the top ranking of any Lady Flame, as her conference-record 100 fly time of 53.18 was right at 38th place entering the week. The A cut, which guarantees qualification, is 52.11.
Emilie Kaufman and Laura Day are both B qualifiers in the 100 breaststroke, with Kaufman's conference-best 1:01.04 ranking her 44th. Day, with a time of 1:01.45, sits 51st on the national performance list. The current 38th fastest time is 1:00.72, shared by Shannon O'Malley of Georgia and Jessica Schmitt of USC.
Ravettine (22.78) and Gary (22.96) both swam B cuts in the 50 free this past week. Ravettine clocked 22.19 last year, and placed 13th at the 2012 NCAA Championships. This year, Ravettine's time of 22.78 is ranked 72nd in the nation. Currently, 22.55 (Blake Zeigler – Minnesota) serves as the last invited time, 38th. Babcock swam 23.02 at the CCSA Championships, just .03 away from the B cut, while Thomas (23.49) will also compete in the 50.
Ravettine, Gary and Babcock will also swim the 100 freestyle. Ravettine has Liberty's only B cut in the 100, at 49.80. That time ranks her 93rd in the nation, while Sam Tucker of Texas (49.05) is currently in 38th place. Gary (50.62) and Babcock (50.66) will both be attempting to reach the B standard of 49.99.
