The Flames closed out the home portion of their 2012 regular-season schedule in grand fashion, knocking off No. 6/8 Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon, 28-14.
The win marked the program's first-ever victory over a Top 10 program and was the Flames' first victory over a nationally ranked team under head coach Turner Gill.
The victory also kept the Flames hopes alive for their fifth Big South title in the last six seasons. With a road victory over VMI this Saturday, the Flames would share the 2012 Big South title with at least Stony Brook (5-1 BSC) and possibly Coastal Carolina (4-1 BSC, at home vs. Charleston Southern this weekend).
Liberty got two offensive touchdowns from "wildcat" quarterback Brian Hudson (a 49-yard touchdown pass to Desmond Rice and a four-yard touchdown run), plus two defensive touchdowns (21-yard interception return by Nick Sigmon and a 44-yard fumble return caused by Sigmon and returned by Jacob Hagen) to secure the victory over the Seawolves.
