Liberty finished in second place at the Big South Championship on Wednesday.
Preston Dembowiak (76-73-77—226) led the Flames, earning all-conference honors, finishing in a tie for sixth place at 10 over par. Big South Freshman of the Year Robert Karlsson (80-75-76—231) finished in a tie for 12th place and Nathan Schenz-Davis (81-73-81—235) finished tied for 21st, while all-league honoree Tobias Pettersson (81-79-76—236) tied for 25th. Jay Calvo (83-73-83—239) rounds out the Liberty five, tying for 29th.
Big South Golfer of the Year Zack Byrd (75-67-79—221) of Coastal Carolina held on for medalist honors as four other Chanticleers finished in the top six, including Sam Lyons (77-73-74—224) and David Dannelly (73-73-78—224) who both finished in a tie for second place. Another Chanticleer, Drew Ernst (75-73-77—225) and High Point's D.J. Dougherty (74-72-77—225) tied for fourth.
Liberty entered the day trailing Gardner-Webb (926) by five strokes, but overcame and nudged the Bulldogs down to third place. Winthrop (927) captured fourth place, while Radford (928) rounds out the top five.
Liberty concludes its regular season slate with the 22nd Annual Cavalier Classic, hosted by Virginia. The two-day/54 hole event begins on Saturday at the Birdwood Golf Course, in Charlottesville, Va.
