Final Big South Sasser Cup Standings

Following a season where its athletics programs captured 10 conference titles, the Liberty University Athletics Department has claimed the Big South Conference's George F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup for the 2012-13 athletics season.

The Sasser Cup trophy was presented to President/Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr., Director of Athletics Jeff Barber, Senior Woman Administrator Erin McKeown and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Bill Gribbin. The announcement was made Thursday evening at the Big South Conference's annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.

Liberty captured the Big South's top athletics honor for the sixth year in a row, extending its own conference record for consecutive Sasser Cups won.

Liberty has been awarded the Big South Sasser Cup 11 times in the last 16 years, giving Liberty more Sasser Cup awards than any other athletics department in Big South Conference history (two more than Coastal Carolina's nine Sasser Cups).

Liberty finished with an average of 13.56 points (244 points in 18 sports), winning the Sasser Cup by an average of 0.65 points over Coastal Carolina (12.91 average – 232.5 points in 18 sports).

Rounding out the top five programs in the final 2012-13 Sasser Cup standings were High Point, who finished third with an average of 11.53 points 173 points in 15 sports), Campbell, who finished fourth with an average of 10.29 points (185.25 points in 18 sports) and Charleston Southern, who finished fifth with an average of 9.20 points (147.25 points in 16 sports).

Liberty was also awarded the Big South Women's All-Sports Award, taking home the honor for the fourth year in a row and fifth time in the last six years.

In the Women's All-Sport Award standings, Liberty won by a 1.84 average point margin, finishing ahead of Coastal Carolina. The Lady Flames topped the standings with an average of 13.94 points (125.5 points in nine sports) to the Chanticleers' 12.10 average points (121 points in 10 sports).

Coastal Carolina was able to edge out Liberty in the Men's All-Sports Award standings, finishing ahead of Liberty by an average of 0.77 points. Coastal Carolina claimed the Men's All-Sports Award trophy with an average of 13.94 points (111.5 points in eight sports) to Liberty's 13.17 average points (118.5 points in nine sports).

Liberty finished the season capturing conference titles in 10 of the 18 programs the Big South Conference sponsors as championship sports (field hockey competes in the NorPac Conference and women's swimming competes in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association).

During the 2012-13 season, Liberty captured Big South titles in the following programs: baseball, football, men's basketball, men's cross country, men's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field, volleyball, women's basketball, women's cross country and women's outdoor track & field.

The Sasser Cup trophy, named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically based on an average points system. Points are awarded based on both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the league's 18 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular season and tournament, respectively.

A school must be eligible to participate in a specific sport championship to receive Sasser Cup points in the sport. There is a weighted factor of 1.5 for those sports which only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track and golf), but not both.  Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned.
