Swimming Begins Home Schedule Against Duquesne on Friday
Liberty opens its 2012-13 home swimming schedule on Friday, hosting Duquesne at 4 p.m. inside the LaHaye Aquatic Center. The meet will be featured on a tape-delay basis on the Liberty Channel, the Lady Flames' first dual meet ever to be televised.
Duquesne visits Liberty for the first time in swimming after the two teams met in Pittsburgh last season. The Lady Flames downed the Dukes, 143-119, on Jan. 14, 2012 during the teams' first-ever meeting.
Doors will open for the meet at 3 p.m., one hour prior to the first event. All spectators are asked to enter through the Thomas Indoor Soccer Center entrance. From there, fans will be given wristbands before being directed to the pool area, where seating is limited.
How to Follow the Lady Flames
Fans will have a unique opportunity to follow Friday's meet, as it will be aired on a tape-delay basis at a later date on the Liberty Channel. The Flames Sports Network will produce a full TV broadcast with multiple camera angles, including a track camera and a pair of underwater cameras. Check back to LibertyFlames.com for updates on the air date, along with links to the broadcast.
The Lady Flames are 7-2 in dual meets so far this season, including 4-1 against Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) teams. Liberty has defeated conference foes Georgia Southern, Gardner-Webb, Campbell and VMI, while picking up non-conference wins over North Dakota, Boston College and Maine.
Most recently, Liberty capped its week-long Florida training trip by posting a 2-1 record at the Florida Gulf Coast Quad Meet last Saturday. Emilie Kaufman won two events for the Lady Flames, the 100 breast and 200 IM, giving her nine event victories out of 10 dual-meet individual swims this season.
Jess Reinhardt came in second place in the 100 fly at Florida Gulf Coast, while Brye Ravettine registered a pair of runner-up finishes, in the 50 free and 100 free.
Kaufman, a junior, made a strong statement at the Hokie Fall Invitational in November. She
broke program records in the 100 (1:01.85) and 200 (2:19.12) breaststroke, along with the 200 individual medley (2:04.35). Her 100 breaststroke time met the NCAA Division I B standard and US Open standard.
Freshman Hannah Wakeley broke the program record in the 1,650 free at the Hokie Fall Invitational, swimming 17:40.40. The Lady Flames also clocked a school-record 1:43.68 in the 200 medley relay at the meet, with Emily Duff, Kaufman, Reinhardt and Ravettine contributing to the record relay.
Kaufman has been named CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week twice this season (Oct. 17 and Nov. 21).
Ravettine, a 2012 All-American and CCSA Swimmer of the Year, has clocked 23.29 in the 50 free and 51.90 in the 100 free so far this season. She has four individual event victories this year and has been a key contributor to the team's sprint relays.
Wakeley broke Liberty's record in the 1,000 free during her first collegiate meet, swimming 10:34.02 on Oct. 12 at Campbell. Fellow freshman Laura Day set a school record in the 200 breaststroke at 2:24.12 on Oct. 20, which has since been broken by Kaufman.
The Lady Flames have shown tremendous depth this season. A total of nine Liberty swimmers have claimed at least one individual event victory, with four freshmen posting event wins.
Relays have been a source of strength for the Lady Flames, as Liberty's 200 free relay and 200 and 400 medley relays are all rated second in the latest CCSA top times list.
Duquesne brings a 2-5 record, including a 2-2 mark in Atlantic 10 competition, into Friday's meet, with wins over Butler and Xavier. The Dukes, similar to Liberty, closed 2012 and opened 2013 with a training trip to Florida. The team placed fifth out of six teams at the Cleveland State Invitational in November.
Sophomore Line Lovberg, holds the top 400 IM time in the Atlantic 10, at 4:21.99, and is third in the 200 fly with a 2:03.47. Lovberg is Duquesne's record holder in the 100 fly and 200 fly. Junior Meghan Smith is rated third in the conference in the 400 IM (4:28.00) and fourth in the 200 fly (2:03.82), while Jamie Ruh ranks 10th for the 400 IM, at 4:32.40.
Following Friday's meet, Liberty will close out its 2012-13 home schedule by hosting Marshall on Jan. 26 at 11 a.m.
