Advantages Found in the Liberty University Federal Work-Study Program
There are several advantages of Federal Work-Study for resident students who want to earn money to help pay for college expenses:
1. Future Eligibility: A little known fact is that Federal Work-Study wages are NOT counted towards next year’s expected family contribution! This means that a Federal Work-Study student’s eligibility for grants and loans next year will likely be higher than if that same student earned NON-Federal Work Study wages.
2. Flexible Schedule: Federal Work-Study job work hours are usually much more flexible to fit around a student’s classes. This ultimately frees up more time for the student (often in the evenings and on the weekends).
3. Quick Commute: Most Federal Work-Study jobs are near where a resident student lives. Jobs on the Liberty campus are just a short walk or bus ride away – no need for a car and its expenses. Additionally, a positive-supportive Liberty campus environment is helpful for academic AND job-related work.
4. Practical Work: Students often choose jobs related to their major or interests. For example, a business major, may seek employment in an office environment on campus. Not only will that student benefit by a paycheck, but that future business professional now possesses an employment experience presentable on their resume.
5. Meaningful Work: Some students use their work hours to provide a service to the community. The federal government requires that 7% of all Federal Work-Study funds be paid to students in community service. This means, for example, that Liberty students are paid while they assist in community centers, read and guide children as tutors, and provide services to the homeless and disabled members of the Lynchburg and surrounding communities.
6. Student Success: Multiple studies have shown that a students who work no more than 20 hours a week are more engaged in the activities of their campus, often have higher grade point averages, and manage their time more effectively (including study time).
Student Employment/Work Study
Work Study is a federally-funded program awarded to students based on need as determined from the results of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This program provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students who have financial need as established by the FAFSA.
Earnings are estimated at $4,000 annually; however, students may earn up to their need as established by the FAFSA.
Part-time jobs are available on and off campus.
Federal Work-Study cannot be included toward payment of the semester bill or Financial Check-In since it depends on the student securing a position and working the hours during the semester.
You are currently eligible to apply for Federal Work-Study if it is offered on your Award Letter Notification. Federal Work-Study is an opportunity to work and earn income for your college education while in school. Students are required to secure employment; a position is not guaranteed. Additionally, students must be located in the Lynchburg, VA area in order to obtain Federal Work-Study employment.
