Hannity to speak at Liberty

by Jared Pierce, Asst. Sports Editor
Sean Hannity is leaving the comfort of his Fox News studio to speak at Liberty University as a part of Wednesday’s convocation. Hannity, who also spoke at Liberty’s commencement ceremony in 2005, will speak for 20 minutes and then take questions from students.

Hannity has an honorary degree from Liberty that Chancellor Jerry Falwell bestowed upon him at graduation that year.

The 45 year-old Hannity has been the co-host of the popular FOX pundit show “Hannity and Colmes” alongside Alan Colmes since 1996.

He is also the host of The Sean Hannity Show on WABC Radio, which ranks second behind only Rush Limbaugh in the ratings.

Hannity, who is a leading conservative voice in the American media, is often the center of controversy. Web sites such as hannityisamoron.com and spinsanity.com attest to the strong public opinion that he creates. Hannity even has a Web site called hannidate.com that is the Republican Party’s version of eharmony.com.

The site’s purpose is to provide a place where “people of like conservative minds can come together to meet.”

“(He) is not only a consummate professional communicator, but he is one of our leading conservative media voices,” said Falwell. “I want prospective journalists to be motivated to greatness.”

“Hannity often promotes LU on the air because of his love for this university,” said Falwell.

In an interview on Hannity and Colmes with presidential hopeful Senator John McCain on March 30, 2006, McCain was asked about his speaking at Liberty and some comments he had made during the 2000 presidential election.

Colmes was asking McCain some pointed questions when Hannity defended McCain’s choice.

“(They’re) a great bunch of students,” said Hannity about Liberty. “It’s a very impressive campus. You’ll like it there.”

Hannity has more than just honorary degree ties to Liberty. His wife, Jill, is a Distance Learning student.

As a part of furthering his political involvement, Hannity will be participating in the Freedom Rally in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 25.

Joining him will be Liberty commencement speaker Newt Gingrich and FOXNews correspondent and retired Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North.
