From the Desk

by Amanda Baker

Since I had a lot of things on my mind this week, I figured I’d just make a bulleted list of everything and let you peruse at your leisure. I guess you could liken this tidbit edition of “From the Desk” to those little Chick-Fil-A bites that can only be found during breakfast hours: small and satisfying.

• Wednesday, March 25 – Riding the bus has always been a dangerous place for my thoughts, as they tend to get philosophical whenever something interesting happens. For example, today I got on a bus that only had standing room left. But before I could get into my bus-surfing stance, a kid in the seat next to me stood up and offered to let me sit down. Appreciating his chivalry, I took his seat. Not more than a minute later, the guy across the row from me offered his seat to a girl that was in the same predicament I had been in a few moments before. But instead of taking his seat, the girl brushed past him and left him to sit with feelings of hurt pride and rejection. And girls wonder why chivalry is dying. Buck up, girls. Let our guys be gentlemen.

• Saturday, March 28 – I am a SWAT team member for the day, dressed completely in black and packing a revolver. My mission? Rescue my roommate from her psycho boyfriend, who is threatening to kill her in his backyard.

I’m not really part of the SWAT, and my roommate’s life is not really in danger. We are just helping one of our quad mates shoot a scene for her short film, Asphyxiated. I feel pretty legit carrying an empty airsoft pistol and running around in the rain with a mission in mind.

• Sunday, March 29 – I slept through church today. I know, I know, I should have gone, but I could not drag my sleep-deprived body out of bed. So, to remedy the situation, my roommate and I watched an archived Johnnie Moore sermon from 2007. Anyone who was around back then will remember when he brought an old, dilapidated organ onstage as a sermon illustration about relationships during Sunday morning Campus Church. His sermon ended up being a really good reminder for both of us, and it is always humorous to watch Johnnie futilely try to break the organ that contained no internal supports.

• Monday, March 30 – I realized today just how close my college career is from coming to a close. This revelation came in the form of an e-mail acceptance letter from the National Journalism Center, offering me a summer internship in Washington, D.C. and subsequently throwing me headfirst into the world of professional journalism. I am completely overwhelmed with responsibility, but I do not feel ready to face the “real world” yet. But I guess this is where faith comes in, and reliance on the wisdom of God in 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
