Outdoor Rec Fest - February 26-27

February 22, 2016

Student Activities invites you to the greatest Outdoor Recreation Festival we have ever had. True, it is the first Outdoor Recreation Festival we have ever had, but that just guarantees that it is also the greatest. The Festival will take place on Friday & Saturday, February 26 & 27, with events, workshops, and competitions taking place in both the LaHaye Event Space and at Camp Hydaway. This is why it is going to be the greatest:

Friday, Feb. 26

  • Bouldering Competition – 4-10 p.m. in the LaHaye Student Union, pre-registration is $5 (day-of registration is $10), available to all skill levels, and there will be $75 worth of prizes raffled for all participants
  • Documentary Film – 7 p.m. in the LaHaye Event Space, featuring the film Inspired to Ride, which tells the story of cyclists who raced across the United States in the Trans Am Bike Race, a bike ride with no prize money and no support, demonstrating the power of competitive will and the natural beauty of our country. Dr. David Horton from the Kinesiology Department will host a Q&A following the film.

Friday & Saturday, Feb. 26 & 27

  • Photography Expo – 4-9 p.m. Friday in the LaHaye Student Union Lobby, 1-5 PM Saturday in the LaHaye Event Space. Submissions will be accepted until Thursday, Feb. 24 at 5 PM and must have an outdoor theme. A total of $500 in prizes to B&H Photo will be up for grabs to the top 3 photos.

Saturday, Feb. 27

  • Liberty Mountain 5k – 9 a.m. at Camp Hydaway, $10 in advance for students ($15 day-of).
  • Outdoor Gear Expo – 1-5 p.m. in the LaHaye Event Space, featuring products and gear from Eagles Nest Outfitters, Riverside Runners, Blackwater Bike Shop, Outdoor Trails, Angler’s Lane, and Snowflex
  • Photography Workshop – 3 sessions in the LaHaye Event Space featuring two of Liberty’s own, outstanding photographers Joel Coleman and Mitchell Bryant giving you photography basics, how to plan and execute a shoot, and some gear and equipment demonstrations.
  • Camp Hydaway Daily Programming – 1-5 p.m., featuring a Backcountry Cooking Expo (1-5 p.m.), as well as a Bird & Nature Walk led by Dr. Gene Sattler from the Biology Department.
  • Feature Film & Massive Raffle – starting at 6 p.m. in the LaHaye Event Space, featuring the movie Everest, and a raffle with thousands of dollars in prizes including products from Patagonia, Brooks shoes, Angler’s Lane, Blackwater Bike shop and more.

Just like our Outdoor Recreation program, the Festival has something for everyone, and will get you closer to the amazing, natural beauty of Central Virginia than you’ve ever been before. So don’t miss the Outdoor Recreation Festival, brought to you by Student Activities.
