Intramural Sports

FAQs

1. What are Intramural Sports (IMS)?

Intramural Sports are organized recreational sports leagues that allow students at Liberty to participate in a variety of team and individual sports. Competition exists, but the real focus of intramural sports is health and exercise, social interaction, stress reduction, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

2. Who can play Intramural Sports?

Intramural Sports provide an opportunity for students who cannot, or choose not to participate in NCAA sports, to compete at a lower level of competition. In an effort to allow Faculty/Staff members & Graduate students to interact with Undergraduate students, they are also eligible to participate in the IMS program. Alumni are not eligible to participate. In an effort to achieve an equal level of competition there are a few exceptions and those are found in the Eligibility section of the Policies & Procedures.

3. What Intramural Sports are available to participate in?

The IMS program currently offers sports in both season form and tournament form. Season sports include: Basketball, Coed Volleyball, Fantasy Football, Outdoor Flag Football, Indoor Flag Football, Outdoor Soccer, Indoor Soccer, Softball, Broomball, Disc Golf. Tournaments include Beach Volleyball, Paintball, Dodgeball, Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, and others. Most tournaments are held on a weekend. If there is a sport that is not offered and you would like to see it offered just let us know. If the demand is there we will try to provide it for you.

4. How do I sign up for an Intramural Sport?

As a convenience to you, all Intramural Registration is done online at the IM Sports website (www.liberty.edu/ims). You can create your own team or sign up on the “Free Agents” if you need help finding a team. If you’re signing up as a team the captain will have to sign up the team name and then each player will have to sign up under that team name. The deadline to register a team is found on the Calendar of Events on the IMS home page. The deadline to sign up to play on a team is the first regular season game. If you have any questions or need assistance feel free to stop by or call the IMS office.

5. Is there a fee to play Intramural Sports?

It costs $50 per team per sport to play in a season and $30 per team per sport for a tournament. Individual sports are usually $5. (It may sound like a lot but it is usually broken down to each player paying $4-$5 per sport.)

6. How many players can play on one team?

Each sport has a roster limit that can be found in the Intramural Handbook. A player cannot play on two different teams in the same sport. Players can be added on a team up until the first regular season game. If you need to remove a player from your roster you must contact the IMS office and they will do it for you.

7. When & where are Intramural Sports played?

Most outdoor intramural sports usually run from 5:00 pm until curfew. Indoor sports usually run in the evening from 7:00 pm until just before curfew. Outdoor facilities which include flag football, softball, ultimate frisbee, the disc golf course and soccer fields are located just past Campus East. There are also beach volleyball courts and outdoor basketball courts located at David’s Place. Indoor facilities which include basketball and volleyball courts are located in the brand new LaHaye Student Center, the LaHaye Ice Center and the Schilling Center.

8. How do I find out when I play?

You can log in just like you did to register. The schedule for each team you have registered to play on will be available for you. It will also show you where you play.

9. Can I request certain times to play?

No. Due to time restraints and the amount of teams participating, we can not take time scheduling requests.

10. What happens if my team cannot make a scheduled game?

You must call the IMS office by Noon the day of your scheduled game in order to avoid a fine. If a team does not show up without letting us know they will be assessed a $5 fine. That fine must be paid before your team’s next scheduled game. If not that game will be forfeited and another $5 fine will occur. If that fine is not paid, your team can be dropped from the league.

11. How long is each season?

There is no set length for each season. Our goal is to get as many games for each team that we can. It depends on how many teams we have participating in each sport. The weather may also determine the length of a season. There is a post-season or playoffs for each sport. We try to schedule games on Monday-Friday. There are some 2 day tournaments that we do play on Fridays & Saturdays.

12. What do we need to bring for each game?

Each player must bring their I.D. (Flames Pass) to each game and sign in at the table before playing. If you do not bring your I.D. (Flames Pass) you will not be able to play that day. IMS will provide equipment if needed but each team may bring their own. You do not have to have uniforms to play. We do request that the home team wear white shirts and the away team dark shirts. The first team listed on the schedule is usually the home team. IMS will provide pennies for those who need them. Some teams have purchased their own uniforms or even made them in the past.

13. Are their times my team can practice?

Our facilities are open to use as long as there are no IMS games being played at the same time. Outdoor facility usage is also subject to weather.

14. What is the Founder’s Cup?

This is an all-sports competition that lasts all year to determine an overall campus champion. Each team will accumulate points in three different categories: participation, sportsmanship, & achievement. For a more detailed explanation please check the Founder’s Cup link on the IMS home page.

15. What do we get if we win?

The champions of each sport will receive Intramural Champion T-shirts for each member of their team up to the roster maximum. Seasonal sports champions will also have their team name engraved on their trophy located in the LaHaye Student Center.
