Flames tested by regional powers at first MACRC tournament

Liberty University's racquetball team hosted players and teams from Appalachian State, Colorado Tech, Duke, Maryland, N.C. State, North Carolina, and Virginia at its first Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Racquetball Conference Tournament, this past Friday through Sunday at The Sports Racket in Lynchburg.
Flames head coach Danny Rodriguez teamed up with Luther Hardee to win two three-game matches in men's AB doubles. The tandem rallied past Christian Huffman and Ron Forster, 11-15, 15-14, 11-0, before edging assistant coach Shawn Furman and tournament director Phil Wheeler, 15-10, 13-15, 11-10. Furman and Wheeler later defeated Huffman and Forster, 15-9, 15-12.
Liberty's top two men's players, Joel Denney and Ryan Evans, were shut out for the weekend in their singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches. Denney lost to UVA's Kenneth Lohr, 15-3, 15-1, in his Level 1 Gold Division quarterfinal before being swept by Colorado Tech's Kamyron Meeks in the Red Division finals, 15-6, 15-4. Evans dropped his Level 2 Gold Division quarterfinal match to the Cavaliers' Patrick Litten, 15-5, 15-4, before falling to UNC's Thomas Moore in a three-game Blue Division final, 15-14, 11-15, 11-5.
Denney and Evans also were upended in Level 1 doubles play by UVA's Lohr and Litten, 15-11, 15-5, before taking Meeks and Duke's Tomothy Lerow to three games in a 13-15, 15-7, 11-2 setback and losing to N.C. State's Jordan Matthews and Srinivas Iyengar, 15-0, 15-5.
Abby Lindsey, Liberty's highest-ranked woman's player, rebounded from a 15-5, 15-0 loss to N.C. State's Katherine Leonard to defeat the Wolfpack's Elizabeth Tan, 15-1, 15-3, in the Level 1&2 bracket. She faced two more N.C. State opponents in the next two rounds, losing to Alexa Haggard, 15-9, 15-5, and Kristen Blanton in a three-game tie-breaker, 15-9, 13-15, 11-4.
Lindsey also partnered with Evans at Level 1 mixed doubles, losing a tight match to the Wolfpack pair of Kristen Blanton and Adam Blackwell, 15-11, 15-12.
