September 20, 2013 | Lynchburg, Va.
Defending American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I national champion Minot State received 26 out of 31 first-place votes in the preseason ACHA DI national poll, a computerized ranking released Friday.
Liberty University, which finished last season ranked No. 13, enters the 2013-14 season at that same spot before opening ACHA play Friday at 9:30 p.m. at West Virginia, which was ranked just outside of the Top 25.
Arizona State University received three first-place votes to debut at No. 2 followed by national runner-up Lindenwood, which has played in five of the past six ACHA DI championship games, winning twice. Adrian College, which eliminated Liberty in the second round of the 2012 nationals and entered last year's tournament ranked No. 1, is at No. 4, followed by Ohio, which eliminated the Flames in the second round of last year's event, at No. 5.
Liberty travels to Athens, Ohio, for a rematch with the four-time champion Bobcats on Oct. 4 and 5.
The remainder of the Top 10 includes Oklahoma, Illinois, Robert Morris Illinois, Iowa State, and Davenport. Delaware, which will host the 2014 ACHA DI National Tournament from March 6-11, received the other first-place vote and debuts at No. 11.
Of the 58 teams competing in ACHA DI, including newcomers Colorado and Colorado State, which bumped up from Division II, Wayne State, which made the jump from Division III, and Rochester, Mich., which replaced Rochester, N.Y., the top 20 in the final ranking will advance to the national tournament.
