Men's volleyball ranked No. 2 in NCVF Division I
February 14, 2019 | Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University's men's volleyball team debuted at No. 2, the highest in program history, in the first National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) Division I rankings of the 2019 season.
The Flames are off to a 6-0 start this spring and will compete in Saturday's and Sunday's Hoosier-Illini Classic, played in Bloomington, Ind. Liberty's streak includes a four-game victory over No. 8 Virginia Tech in its Midnight Mayhem season opener Feb. 2 at the Vines Center and a 5-0 first-place finish in last Saturday's East Coast Volleyball Association (ECVA) South Division Play Date at the LaHaye Multipurpose Center.
The only team ranked above Liberty is the University of California Santa Barbara, with No. 6 Florida the only other East Coast team besides the Hokies in the top 10.
The Hoosier-Illini Classic features 20 of the top-ranked Division I teams in the nation. The Flames will play pool matches against Loyola (10:30 a.m. EST), Louisville (1:30 p.m. EST), Northwestern (4:30 p.m. EST), and Ohio State (6:30 EST). Complete brackets are available online.
"Ohio State's ranked No. 7, so that will be a good test right away," Flames Head Coach Brian Rigg said. "This is the best of the Midwest, with a few East Coast teams and a few from further out West. I'm excited."
If Liberty wins its pool, it will go straight to Sunday's 10:30 a.m. (EST) championship semifinals. Otherwise, it will need to play cross-over matches on Saturday night to determine its playoff seeding.
