Bouton, Johnson first, second All Around at Clemson meet
February 2, 2019 | Clemson, S.C.
Liberty University senior Julie Bouton, the individual runner-up at last year's NAIGC National Championships, finished first in the All Around competition at Saturday's season-opening meet hosted by Clemson University to lead the Lady Flames to a team title out of nine teams in the field.
Bouton finished second in all four events — the balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars, and vault — to take first place overall while senior teammate McKella Johnson landed a first-place performance on the uneven bars and came in second in the All Around.
Liberty won the team competition with 104.5 points, edging out Virginia Tech (second, 101.2) and South Carolina (third, 99.2). The other schools at the event were host Clemson, Emory, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.
"It was a great start to the season," Liberty Head Coach Tim Kappel said.
Senior Leah Corpora, freshmen Lindsay Esquirrell and Mia Harvey, junior Sydnie Phillips, and sophomore Emory Cherry also competed for the Lady Flames in a variety of events, but did not place in the top three.
Liberty will travel to at least one more event, March 30 at Wake Forest, before competing in the April 10-13 National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs (NAIGC) National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
