Liberty University's ACHA Division II women's hockey team opened spring semester play by going 3-0 over the weekend to clinch its first berth into both the four-team College Hockey East (CHE) playoffs, set for March 3-4 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the 12-team ACHA DII National Championships, to be played March 14-18 in Columbus, Ohio.

The Lady Flames (9-2) defeated the Naval Academy, 7-2 on Friday night in Annapolis, Md., in a rematch of the Lady Flames' last loss on Nov. 4. Liberty then extended its winning streak to eight with a sweep of West Chester over the weekend, rolling to a 7-1 triumph on Saturday night and a 13-2 rout on Sunday afternoon.

Senior forward Kjrstin Hoberg scored four goals in both games at West Chester. She converted the only two goals in the first period and first two goals in the third stanza of Saturday's opener, with junior forward Kira Rice and senior defenseman Ashley Wright netting the only two goals of the second period before Wright capped the scoring in the third.

Hoberg ignited the Lady Flames' attack with her first goal just 1:24 into Sunday's rematch before netting a hat trick in the third period alone, the last coming unassisted with 47 seconds remaining in regulation.

Rice and junior forward Lauren Pillisch and Wright added two goals apiece while freshman forward Brittany Hegele, freshman defenseman Sarah LaPorte, and senior forward Karis Hicks each scored once.

Senior goalie Faith Gerber posted both wins between the pipes against West Chester (3-11).

Liberty outshot host Navy, 57-28, on Friday, with Gerber making 28 saves. Pillisch scored first before Hoberg tallied twice as Liberty opened a 3-0 advantage. Junior forward Kaitlyn Langabeer and Hegele stretched the Lady Flames' lead to 5-2 after the second stanza before freshman forward Alexis Early and Rice capped the scoring in the third.

Liberty moved up four spots to No. 2 in the second of four ACHA DII East Region rankings, with the third to be released this week.

The Lady Flames will return to the LaHaye Ice Center for a series against Maryland this Saturday at 9:45 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. The last time the two teams met in College Park, Md., Liberty swept the Lady Terrapins by 24-1 and 12-0 scores on Nov. 11-12. Liberty will conclude the regular-season Feb. 10-11 at Delaware, the team it split with at home to open the regular season, before entering the postseason for the first time in six years as an ACHA program.
