Men's Ultimate hosts 10-team Blue Ridge Open this weekend
November 28, 2017 | Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University's men's Ultimate team will host the Blue Ridge Open, its final tournament of the Fall semester, this Saturday and Sunday at the Liberty Mountain Intramural Complex fields.
Besides Old Man Ultimate, a Liberty alumni squad, the favorite in the 10-team tournament is James Madison University, which finished last season in the top 40 in the USA Ultimate Division I national rankings. The Flames will be on more even playing fields with Navy, Elon, High Point, Old Dominion, Ohio, and Ohio State's B team, as well as Big Lick Ultimate Discs (BLUD), a club team from Roanoke.
"JMU finished ranked about 35th last year and the other collegiate teams were all within a few points of each other, ranked between 100th and 140th," Liberty Head Coach Brendan Phillips said. "It should be a good test to see where we stand against teams that were similarly ranked last year."
Competition in two five-team pools on Saturday will establish seeds for playoffs on Sunday, when finals for first, third, fifth, and seventh place are scheduled for 2:20 p.m. on the four intramural fields, with a ninth-place game held on the Liberty Lacrosse Field.
On Nov. 11, the Flames hosted the the Hill City Hatter, attracting 140 players from around Lynchburg — including members of Liberty's women's Ultimate team — and as far away as Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Roanoke who were randomly drawn to form eight co-ed teams.
The tournament raised approximately $1,000 for Liberty's men's team, which will cover the cost of most of its tournament entry fees for the Spring semester.
