Racquetball teams open MACRC tournament play at UNC

Liberty University's men's and women's racquetball teams earned several top finishes at their season debut last weekend during a Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Racquetball Conference (MACRC) tournament hosted by the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.

There were 102 participants in the three-day tournament, representing eight colleges and universities in Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, eastern Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
In Division 1 men's play, the Flames' duo of sophomore Spensir Heath and senior Jacob Simrell won the men's doubles pool play bracket with teammates Daniel Seibler and James Paul Edwards finishing runner-up. Seibler finished third in the Olympic format men's singles Gold bracket. Edwards defeated Liberty senior Seth Jordan in the third-place match of the men's singles Division 1 Red bracket.
Heath also won the men's singles Division 2 Red bracket, and sophomore Garrison Walker placed third in that competition. Simrell won the men's singles Division 2 Blue bracket.
Meanwhile, in Division 3, junior Jaron Proehl and senior Christian Tinsley combined for a third-place showing in the men's doubles Gold bracket. Proehl also finished runner-up in the Division 3 Gold bracket.
In women's tournament play, Lady Flames senior Sadie Abramowicz captured first place in the Division 1/2 Gold bracket and teamed up with sophomore Danielle Pearson to place third in the women's doubles Division 1/2 Gold bracket, with the duo defeating Lady Flames junior Lindsey Marston and senior Caroline Morse in the consolation final.
Morse also finished runner-up in the women's singles Division 1/2 Blue bracket, with Pearson defeating Marston in the third-place final.
Liberty's Rebekah Olson also placed third in the women's singles Division 3/4 White bracket and joined North Carolina State's Kaitlyn Roberts to place fourth in the women's doubles Division 3/4 Red bracket.
In the alumni/coaches/faculty doubles competition, Flames Head Coach Daniel Rodriguez and Assistant Coach Shawn Furman captured first place. Furman also finished runner-up in singles play.
Liberty will travel to its next MACRC tournament from Oct. 28-29 at North Carolina State.
