Lady Flames rowing makes program history at Head of South

November 11, 2012  |  Augusta, Ga.

Liberty University Crew competed at the Head of the South in Augusta, Ga., Saturday, Nov. 10, for the last race of the fall season. Both the men's and women's teams had strong showings, but the Lady Flames earned the spotlight, breaking a program record twice and medaling in two events.

In the women's varsity eight, the premiere division in women's racing, the Lady Flames won the silver medal in a six-boat field, shattering the program record for a 5K course with a time of 18 minutes 41.19 seconds. This was the first varsity medal finish for Liberty in women's eight. The Lady Flames' previous record of 18:56 was set in 2009.

Later in the day, Liberty beat in-state rival Virginia Tech head-to-head in the championship women's eight division, breaking its record once again with at time of 18:34.07. The Lady Flames won by more than 90 seconds.

Liberty's women's novice eight also made program history by claiming its first medal in that division, winning silver against 14 boats after narrowly losing to the University of Georgia by 14 seconds with a time of 20:10.

In the women's championship four division, the Lady Flames went one-on-one with Virginia Tech. Liberty's novice rowers competed against the Hokies' top four varsity rowers, but still came on top by 32 seconds with a time of 21:20.

A unique event Liberty attempted at the Head of the South was the mixed four and mixed eight, in which 50 percent of the rowers are male and 50 percent are female. Though Liberty's program does not train for these events, the Flames finished fourth in both.

The Flames men's crew team faced some very fast programs and proved to be competitive.

In the men's club four Liberty placed seventh out of 13 with a time of 19:38.16. With minimal rest the Flames re-entered the water for a head-to-head with Virginia Tech in the championship four. The rested Hokies won that event.

The Flames finished sixth in the men's lightweight four, at 19:29.49, facing a very competitive field.

In the club eight division, Liberty mixed varsity and novice rowers and still managed to hold off a Clemson varsity boat to finish seventh at 18:41.

In the championship eight, with a full varsity team, the Flames improved their time to 17:52.72, but finished last in the event, in which they faced Virginia Tech and the College of Charleston.
