Liberty DIII hockey sweeps October matchups

After two convincing wins concluded the Liberty Flames Division III men's hockey team's opening month of play Liberty (9-1) carried the momentum forward, winning all four October matchups and outscoring opponents 29-7. The Flames are now ranked eighth in the South according to the latest American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III standings.
The Flames' win streak increased to eight after a pair of wins on the road Nov. 2-3, first at Old Dominion 10-1 and then against Virginia Commonwealth in Glen Allen, Va., by a score of 3-1.
Liberty began the month of October with a two-game road trip beginning at Loyola University (Md.) on Oct. 12. The Flames took that one 3-2 before beating Salisbury University the next night 4-1.
On Oct. 20 the Flames were guests on their own scoreboard as Virginia Military Institute hosted Liberty at the LaHaye Ice Center for a rematch of the Sept. 28 match in which Liberty routed the Keydets 15-1. VMI managed another goal in the rematch, but still gave up 15.
Radford University visited the LaHaye Ice Center Oct. 26 and was welcomed with seven Flames goals in a 7-2 win for Liberty to wrap October play.
So far this season, Brandon Cockburn leads Liberty in points with 28 and goals with 19. Austin Crossley is right behind him with 25 points (16 goals, nine assists). Chris Gurreri and Carl Harter each have 10 assists to lead the Flames.
Cary Byron (4-1) and John Hyland (4-0) have split the bulk of the season in goal for Liberty. Hyland has a 1.97 goals against average and a .92 save percentage (90 saves on 98 attempts). Cary has taken 120 shots this season with109 saves for a .91 save percentage and 2.20 GAA.
Liberty will look to stretch its eight-game win streak as it hosts George Mason University Saturday at 10 p.m.
