Flames Division I streak ends at eight
October 5, 2012 | Springfield, Ill.
Luke Baumgarten finished with a pair of goals but the Oklahoma Sooners were able to hold on and hand the Liberty Flames Division I Men's Hockey Team its first loss of the season 5-4 at the Nelson Center in Springfield, Ill., on the first night of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division I Showcase.
Baumgarten got things started early as he was able to put one past Sooners netminder Colin Fernandes to put the Flames up 1-0. Darrell Boldon was quick to respond and he tied the game at 1. Baumgarten responded with a power play goal midway through the period, but late in the period, Jordan Greenberg took a loose puck and put it past Flames goalie Clayton Brown to tie the game at 2 going into the intermission.
Mark Jackson got the only goal of the second as he gave the Sooners their first lead of the night midway through the period.
Brandon Dennis gave Oklahoma a two-goal cushion in the third, before Ryley Egan cut the deficit to 4-3 off a pass from Baumgarten.
Boldon restored the two-goal lead midway through before Tyson Street cut it back to one on an unassisted effort.
Liberty pulled the goalie late to get an extra attacker but could not get the equalizer as Oklahoma picked up the win.
Fernandes played all 60 to get the win for the Sooners, while Brown took the loss for the Flames.
Liberty returns to action on Saturday afternoon against the Minot State Beavers on day two of the showcase. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
