Flames win fourth in physical matchup
October 5, 2012 | Lynchburg, Va.
DJ Dinnison and John Cotton each had a pair of goals and Justin Gortman made 20 saves as the Liberty Flames Division II Men's Hockey Team defeated the North Carolina State Wolfpack 9-5 at the LaHaye Ice Center Friday night.
Cotton opened the scoring five-and-a-half minutes into the first period taking a rebound and putting it past Wolfpack goaltender Nick Kamaris to put the Flames up 1-0. Before everyone had a chance to finish cheering from that goal, leading scorer Brad Docksteader also beat Kamaris to make the score 2-0.
Alec Engel cut the deficit in half on a pass from Tyler Cloutier, but 31 seconds later Aaron Semiao restored the two-goal advantage on a pass from Dinnison. Docksteader added his second of the night two minutes later on a nice individual effort to put Liberty up 4-1, then Cotton took a nice back door pass from Dinnison and slapped it home to put Liberty up 5-1.
Mike Reisland brought NC State back within three on a penalty shot, just sneaking it in under the glove of Gortman, but Dinnison restored the advantage on a nice assist from Cotton to put Liberty up 5-2.
Engel brought the Wolfpack back to 5-3 after a puck bounced off a Flames stick and trickled past Gortman, before Clinton Nigh slapped a rebound home to put the Flames back up 6-3.
Mackie Hayman cut the deficit to two again on a breakaway, but Nigh slapped home another rebound to put Liberty up 7-4. The teams traded goals by Blue and Dinnison to conclude the scoring.
Liberty returns to action next Friday for a matchup against East Carolina University at the Raleigh Ice Center, before a rematch with NC State on Saturday. Game time Friday is set for 9 p.m.
