Flames roll to eighth straight win
September 29, 2012 | Lynchburg, Va.
Kyle Garcia had a pair of goals and Rick Turner notched his fourth hat trick of the season as the Liberty Flames Division I Men's Hockey team completed a perfect eight game homestand with an 11-2 victory over Robert Morris Saturday night.
Garcia got things started for Liberty, taking a pass from Turner and putting it past Colonials goalie Alex Blum to put Liberty up 1-0 just over two minutes into the game.
Five minutes later, Ryan Kerr picked up his second goal of the year off a Scott Morongell assist to put Liberty up 2-0. Midway through the frame, Garcia scored his second goal of the night off another Turner assist and the Flames went up 3-0.
Spanning both nights, Liberty scored 15 of the first 16 goals before Beau Roeder finally put one past Flames goalie Blair Bennett with six minutes remaining in the period.
Turner got in on the scoring two minutes later, putting in his 14th goal of the young season on a solo effort, working from behind the Colonials net to eventually beat Blum from the left side to put Liberty up 4-1 going into the intermission.
Luke Baumgarten got his second goal in as many nights just 33 seconds into the second period to put Liberty up three, before Christopher Howland beat Bennett from the point to cut the deficit to 4-2. But Turner restored the advantage with another unassisted goal with four minutes to go, and the Flames would enter the locker room up 5-2.
Christian Garland scored the fastest goal of the season to open the third, taking the puck off the opening faceoff and blasting it past Blum to put Liberty up 6-2. From there it was all Flames as Kerr scored his second of the night on the power play, and Turner finished his hat trick before Danny Logan scored his first goal as a Liberty Flame, taking a loose puck from the right side and stuffing it home. Bram Erickson scored with just 21 seconds remaining to close the scoring.
Liberty outshot the Colonials 29-13 on the night. Blair Bennett picked up his second win of the season, going all 60 minutes and making 11 saves. Blum took the loss for Robert Morris, allowing all 11 goals in his 60 minutes of play.
Liberty will next be in action Friday night as they take part in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) DIvision I Showcase in Springfield, Ill. The Flames will open play against the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners at the Nelson Center, with the opening faceoff set for 6:45 p.m.
