Kyle Garcia had two goals and seven different Flames found the net as the Liberty University Division I Men's Hockey team cruised past Mercyhurst University 8-2 at home Friday night.
Liberty dominated the first period, keeping the pressure on the Mercyhurst end of the ice before Matt Sherry beat Bryan Danczak on the power play to put Liberty up 1-0 with about five minutes to go in the period.
Lindsay LeBlanc picked up his fifth goal of the year early in the second off a pass from Cam Bakker to put the Flames up 2-0. Liberty continued to turn up the heat and it paid off as Garcia tipped a Rick Turner shot past Danczak, and Liberty went up 3-0.
Jonathan Bayer broke the ice for Mercyhurst and scored their first goal of the year on a two-man advantage to cut the deficit to 3-1. But Turner took a pass from Garcia and slapped it home to push the Flames ahead by three once again.
Bram Erickson scored off a rebound after Danczak made a nice save to up the lead to 5-1, and Steven Bellew notched a goal off a Ryan Kerr assist to end a very physical period — which saw 16 penalties handed out.
Caleb Grow stole the puck as he was leaving the penalty box and notched his second goal of the year midway through the third period to up Liberty's lead to 7-1. Peter Hlusko scored a shorthanded goal for Mercyhurst about two minutes later.
Garcia closed the night taking a pass from fellow rookie B.J. Pirus, upping the score to 8-2.
