Flames 29th at nationals fueled by Anderson's 25th-best time

Flames junior Joey Anderson bettered his USA Triathlon Nationals place from 45th in 2012 and 31st last year to 25th on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz., capped by a 10K run time of 35:37.

Junior Joey Anderson crossed the finish line 25th out of 1,166 total triathletes (male and female) in a time of 1 hour, 51 minutes, 37.95 seconds to lead Liberty University's triathlon team to a 29th place finish out of 119 teams at Saturday's USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships in Tempe, Ariz.

Anderson, who placed 45th as a freshman to help the Flames to a 19th-place team showing out of 122 teams and 31st as a sophomore, got off to a fast start with a 1.2-mile swim time of 20:46 and a transition time of 1:21 to gear up for the cycling stage. He completed the 25-mile bike leg in 52:57 before requiring 2:59 to transition into the 10K run, crossing the finish line 35:37 later.

Senior teammate Josiah Slaydon finished 208th out of the 715 men's finishers in 2:06.47, completing his swim in 24:20 with a 1:52 transition time to get on the bike. He followed that with a time of 1:00:23 in the cycling stage with a 1:31 transition time to the run, which he finished in 38:43.

Senior Blake Williams completed the Olympic-distance triathlon course 239th overall in 2:08:09 followed by freshman Robert Weisbach, the Flames' fourth-fastest finisher and 344th overall in 2:13:25.

The Lady Flames placed 33rd overall, matching the men.

Liberty's men finished 33rd as a team with 1,182 points while the Lady Flames also came in 33rd in the women's points race with 1,226 points. Complete team scores are available online, showing that the University of Colorado captured its fifth consecutive men's title with 4,028 points, edging UCLA (4,007), which won the women's race with 2,073. The Naval Academy, the Mid-Atlantic Conference rival that won the Liberty University Intercollegiate Triathlon on the Lynchburg, Va., campus on Sept. 21, 2013, came in fifth overall with 3,783 points with its men's team third with 1,960.

Elizabeth Vernon, a freshman from Forest, Va., was Liberty's fastest female triathlete in 2:23:45, putting her in 130th place out of 451 female finishers. She accomplished the swim in 27:12, the cycling stage in 1:09:20, and the run in 43:31, requiring 1:48 and 1:58 in the two transition zones.

She was followed closely by senior teammate Katie Mullaly, who came in 144th among women in 2:24:26. She finished the swim in 26:46, the bike in 1:05:06, and the run in 48:57 with transition times of 2:05 and 1:37.

Placing third for Liberty was Zoie Dobrzanski, who was the 209th-fastest woman overall in 2:30.12.5, while juniors Hannah Baldino (296th in 2:38:18) and Ginny Mitchell (375th in 2:50:59) took fourth and fifth for the Lady Flames.
