Baldwin third on vault at N.C. State, team gears up for Atlanta

February 8, 2014  |  Raleigh, N.C.

Jonathan Baldwin, a graduate student in his first year competing for the Flames, practices on the rings. He performed especially well on the vault at North Carolina State's Wolfpack Invitational.

Senior Jonathan Baldwin stuck his landing and finished third on the vault to highlight Liberty University's gymnastics team's performance at the Feb. 8 Wolfpack Invitational, a National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs meet hosted by North Carolina State University.

"Despite having a few season-ending injuries already this season, the team was able to step up to fill in the gaps and encourage each other throughout the competition," Liberty second-year Head Coach Rachel Steele said. "They did pretty well. We've got some work to do, but we're making steps in the right direction, so I'm excited to see their potential."

A total of six women's teams competed, including host N.C. State, the University of North Carolina, College of Charleston (S.C.), and Virginia Tech.

Steele said the Lady Flames had a few exceptional performances though they didn't wind up placing in the top three in any individual event.

"Alyssa Frost's bars and floor routines, Constance McNair's beam routine, and Jennifer School's floor routine were all outstanding," Steele said. "Jennifer Schools added some new skills in her routine and did an excellent job. Alexandra Westcott also added a new pass on floor and performed well."

The team's next competition will be hosted by Emory University in Atlanta on March 1 before traveling to the April 2-5 National Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn.

"We're also going to be hosting a competition," Steele said. "That will be set up differently than a regularly-scored meet, with our own scoring system. We're excited about that."

That event will take place at Elite Gymnastics on Waterlick Road in Lynchburg. Participating schools expected are the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, James Madison, N.C. State, North Carolina, William & Mary, and Tennessee.
