DII Flames get balanced scoring in MACH rout of Blue Hens

February 14, 2014  |  Abingdon, Md.

Senior forward Bobby Cervone scored Liberty's only goal of the first period and was one of six scorers in the game for the Flames.

In the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey playoffs, South Division top-seeded Liberty University's ACHA Division II men's hockey team dominated fourth-seeded Delaware University, winning by a 7-1 count Friday at IceWorld in Abingdon, Md.

The Flames (24-6-1) got goal production from all four of their lines and netted four goals in the second period in one of their most complete performances of the season, outshooting the Blue Hens, 43-22.

"We played good, everything clicked," Liberty Head Coach Chris Lowes said. "(Goalie) Cary (Byron) made some good saves. It was a good team effort top to bottom. We're really happy. We played a good team game Hopefully, the momentum will carry through the rest of this weekend and into next weekend."

When they host the ACHA DII South Regional Tournament Feb. 22-23 at the LaHaye Ice Center, the Flames will face the Blue Hens again in the first round.

On Friday, Liberty's Bobby Cervone scored first off an assist from behind the net from fellow senior forward Brad Docksteader midway through the first period. Jeff Boschman then received a cycled pass from fellow sophomore forward Eric Burke and carried it off the boards before lifting it top shelf with a wrist shot for a 2-0 advantage early in the second period.

Sophomore forward Paul Ingles extended the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal after streaking down the right side and depositing a wrist shot into the five-hole before sophomore defenseman Nat Arbour made it 4-0 off a feed from behind the net from freshman forward Ben Freymond. Freshman defenseman Ryan Sidun capped the second-period scoring off an assist from freshman forward Devon Docksteader.

Burke scored the Flames' first third-period goal on a breakaway before Arbour netted his second, off a rebound of shots by freshman defenseman Bannon Lynott and sophomore defenseman Parker McIntire. That padded the advantage to 7-0 before Delaware finally got a goal with five minutes left to end the shutout.

The Flames will face the winner of Friday's late game between second-seeded Virginia Tech and third-seeded University of Maryland Baltimore County in Saturday's semifinals set for 5:30 p.m.
