Flames chalk up eight place-winners at Southern Virginia

December 7, 2013  |  Buena Vista, Va.

Liberty Head Coach Jesse Castro (top left) and Assistant Coach Allen Hackmann (second row, far right) pose with the 16 mostly underclass wrestlers they brought to Saturday's Turkey Bowl hosted by Southwest Virginia University in Buena Vista.

Competing with a group of 16 wrestlers at Saturday's nine-team Southern Virginia University Turkey Bowl, Liberty University's wrestling team came away from Buena Vista, Va., with two individual champions, one runner-up, two consolation winners, and four fourth-place finishers.

Due to a shortage of contestants in their weight classes, sophomore heavyweight Zach Newton and junior 157-pounder Eric Woodard started tournament competition in the semifinal round. Both finished 2-0 to take home titles, with Newton pinning Hampden-Sydney University's Drew Clark at the 6:00-mark of his final and Woodard needing 10 seconds less to record a fall against Noel Wright of tournament host SVU.

"Zach came from behind to win in the finals," Liberty Assistant Coach Allen Hackmann said of Newton, who defeated an NCWA qualifier from Bridgewater College in the semifinals. "He kept wrestling hard and pulled out a third-period pin … which was definitely a positive step."

Liberty Christian Academy graduate Patrick Good placed second for the Flames at 174 pounds, dropping a 10-2 major decision to Eastern Tennessee State University's Manako Peay in his first collegiate tournament final to finish at 3-1.

Freshman Jake Paull claimed third place at 141, avenging a loss to Ferrum College's Ryan Clingenpeel with a pin 1:30 into his consolation final. Senior Josh Sturgill also took third at 174 with a 13-9 decision over West Virginia Tech's Zach Nibert, improving to 4-1 on the day.

Wrestling in the same weight class as Good, Sturgill suffered an early loss to ETSU's Peay, the eventual champion.

Senior Jeremy Beale (133), sophomore Kent Rasmussen (157), senior Jacob Hood (197), and freshman Charlie Hancock (235) each placed fourth.

Liberty was scheduled to face Ferrum and Middlesex (N.J.) Community College in a tri-match in Colonial Heights, Va., on Sunday, but weather forecasts have left that event in question, with Ferrum already canceling its trip.
