DII Flames sweep IUP in last two games before Christmas
December 7, 2013 | Lynchburg, Va.
Sophomore forward Paul Ingles and senior forward Brad Docksteader netted hat tricks and Ingles added three assists as Liberty University's ACHA Division II men's hockey team completed a sweep of visiting Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a resounding 11-0 victory, Saturday afternoon at the LaHaye Ice Center.
In Friday night's opener, a 5-1 triumph, junior defenseman Clinton Nigh started the scoring for the Flames after freshman forward Ben Freymond won a faceoff in the neutral zone. Nigh took the puck near his own blue line and skated left to right across the ice before launching a shot from the red line that bounced over the shoulder of IUP goalie Dante Koeppen and into the net.
Sophomore forward Peter Kazmierczak made it 2-0 late in the first period, seconds after taking the ice off a delayed penalty against Koeppen. He received a pass from behind the net from Ingles and one-timed a slapshot from between the circles inside the left post. Docksteader added two goals and freshman forward Devon Docksteader had one to cap the scoring for the Flames.
On Saturday, Liberty (21-4) opened a 6-0 lead on the Crimson Hawks (4-8-1) — facing goalie Corey Chapin — after the second period and added five more goals in the third against Koeppen. Ingles started the scoring off assists from Docksteader and senior forward Bobby Cervone just over two minutes into the first period before Kazmierczak finished a feed from sophomore forward Jeff Boschman eight minutes later.
Boschman made it 3-0 with just under five minutes to go in the first, putting away assists from Kazmierczak and sophomore forward Jeremy Miller. Ingles then set up Brad Docksteader for the first and last scores in the second, with Docksteader's second coming less than a minute after a score by sophomore forward Eric Burke.
Just two minutes into the third, Ingles cleaned up rebounds of short-ranged shots by the Docksteader brothers with a backhander into an open net from deep in the left crease, extending the Flames' advantage to 7-0.
Sophomore defenseman Parker McIntyre then blistered a slapshot from the high slot into the net at the 14:25 mark before freshman forward Jordan Barstead received an outlet pass up the left wing and finished a two-on-one break with junior forward Johnny Cotton by rifling a wrist shot from in the left circle into the upper left netting for a 9-0 advantage with 7:30 left.
Ingles assisted Brad Docksteader with a backwards pass through the crease, where Docksteader chopped the puck around Koeppen and deposited it into the back of the net with a deft backhand. Then, he returned the favor by assisting Ingles on a fast-break finish from point-blank range for the final score.
