Freshman claims Flames' first-ever title at Joe Parisi Open

November 23, 2013  |  St. Charles, Mo.

Freshman 133-pound wrestler Ryan Diehl became the first Liberty University wrestler to capture an individual crown in the Joe Parisi Open tournament, Saturday at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo.

Diehl, who also won his weight class at a 15-team Fall Brawl Invitational Nov. 9 near Philadelphia, finished 4-0, recording two technical falls en route to the final, where he decisioned Nathan Rodriguez of Ouachita Baptist University, 7-4.

"All in all, it was a very productive day," Liberty Head Coach Jesse Castro said. "We were the only NCWA (club) team entered in the tournament and there were some very strong Division I teams there, including Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Northern Iowa. So I was real proud of the team. We had turned the heads of many there by doing as well as we did as a club team amongst a very competitive field."

Also in the freshman/sophomore division, 165-pound freshman Josh Ferenczy, who has the most wins so far this season at 12-4, finished 4-2 with two pins. He wrestled back to the medal round before losing a tight 3-1 decision Morgan Fitzgerald from host Lindenwood.

Meanwhile, 125-pound freshman Tim Nordan went 3-2, landing two falls along the way and 149-pound sophomores Peter Tatanish and Josh Sanders both advanced to the quarterfinals with two wins before being eliminated with back-to-back losses.

Liberty sophomore heavyweight Zach Newton wound up 2-2 and freshman 149-pounder Ike Podell and freshman 184-pounder Matt Reynolds both finished 1-2 in the freshman/sophomore division.

In the open Gold Division, junior 157-pounder Chase Boontjer went 1-2 and junior 174-pounder Keyshaun Ward was injured in his first match and forced to drop out of the tournament, and sophomore heavyweight Josh Travers went two and out.
