Gymnastics team earns solid results at nationals

Liberty University picked up a pair of top 20 finishes to highlight their trip to the 2012 National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs National Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, this past weekend.

In their first trip to nationals, the men's team placed 17th out of 58 teams. David Tighe finished 5th in the vault and Steve Lucia finished 14th.

The women's team placed in the top 15 out of 58 teams, despite being without senior captain Rachel Steele, who broke her hand in warm-ups.

"Even with this horrible turn of events, the athletes picked themselves up and performed amazingly," said head coach Mariah Dailey.

The women's team was led by freshman Alyssa Frost, who placed 13th in the balance beam and 16th in the all-around competition, and Jill Wippermann, who took 18th in the all-around and qualified for three event finals: vault, 11th; floor exercise, 14th and balance beam, 21st.
